It's been all over the news recently. Is this just a passing craze among some kids or is this something longer term the city needs to take a hard look at (and no, curfews alone aren't going to solve the problem)?

Probably a passing craze. Sounds like this time the police were on it and there were no incidents? Or was there one?

Not likely. Way too much money invested by rich and powerful people to let it turn into that. They'll make it a police state if they have to.

I agree...

After the incident a few days ago, they've decided to stop giving warnings and start putting kids into custody for even minor infractions. In the past, they'd take the kids home, but now they'll require the parents to come pick them up.

Hopefully this will help, but it should have already been done. My guess is that changes have been gradual since most of the kids are black, and there's already been people crying racism in regards to the curfew and the issuing of tickets.

Well, this problem has been going on for years now, so we shall see. The city and police seem to be getting serious about the problem judging from their latest statements and plans. They should have been at this point over 2-3 years ago when Mayor James had to duck for cover from nearby gunshots while showing around out-of-town guests. I saw on the new the other day a local pastor calling for plans and stating that something has to be done or these incidents will "destroy the city".

But I wonder how Westport is doing. I have heard it's calmed down, but am not sure. Last time I was down there on Friday or Saturday nights on a regular basis was 2010 and shootings and mobs were still a problem then. Back then I remember police used to literally herd the black youth/young adults like cattle.

I was genuinely surprised to see the KC Star editorial today refer to them as "150 black kids".

I don't think it's a passing phase. It's been going on for a while now and I was listening to a talk show radio the other day and someone called in who lives near the Plaza and they said even though you just hear about it in the news occasionally, it happens every weekend.

Does KC play the ads before the news that say "It's 10 o'clock, do you know here your kids are?" They do here all the time. Don't recall KC stations doing that, but I guess it's pretty common.

I haven't heard them do that. But the guy that called into the radio station who lives near the Plaza said that he has seen kids that look as young as 10 being dropped off on the Plaza. It's obviously not 10 year old that are causing problems, but what kind of parent drops their 10 year old kid off at the Plaza?

But also what I have heard is that these groups of 150 will "storm" a store on the Plaza and then move on to another store. Can you imagine 150 kids descending on your store at one time? I mean, it's not like they are shopping. Apparently the Apple Store is one of the places they like to go.
