Hi guys,

I was accepted at KU for PhD degree in CS, and i would like to know how much does it cost to live at Lawrence for a couple and a 2 years old child?
I would like to hear from people who lived /living there.
Before I post here I asked two guys living in US about one said 4000/m and the other said 1500/m

The university offers me 1700/m , so i want to know i will be able to bring my family with me .

I will really appreciate your responses .

You can find a wide range of prices for apartments/homes, just like anywhere else. KU does have married student housing on campus (Stouffer Place) for married couples that is very reasonable. There is probably a waiting list for that, though. I think $1700 a month would be very hard to live on anywhere for a couple and a child, but I guess it could be done if you found inexpensive housing and utilities and didn't spend a lot on food.

The poverty line for a family of 4 is $23.8K. If you are only getting $20.4K you are going to struggle.
Housing is the biggest obstacle. I can't see you getting into a 2 BR apt in Lawrence (or KC) for under $800, once utilities are included. So use that as a figure. Then groceries for a family of 4, guesstimate $150 per week.... That leaves $300 a month for everything else. Going to be tough, theoretically doable, but tough.

IMO, the only way to pull it off would be to get additional income.
