Kansas Citians don't know what rush hour is.

Having had to commute in rush hour in Phoenix (which isn't horrible, but does exist) and in San Francisco (which is horrible, but only during the peak travel periods) Kansas City rush hour is like off-peak driving in San Francisco.

Since we'll be one income until my husband can find work, I probably will rent at first and then look 250k range. That keeps me from Loch Lloyd, Leawood area, etc.

If it's 30 minutes or less, I can do it. I live in a Columbia MO, and on bad days it takes 20 minutes for me to get to work (and I live...3 miles from work...!!!!!!.) I grew up outside of KC so I know that while most everything feels close, I don't ever drive during rush hour, so I don't have that perspective. Now, I did get stuck in the beginning of rush hour traffic coming out of IKEA a few months ago and I was amazed at how it didn't seem congested at all, especially when I got on 635.

You're probably looking at about 35 minutes at rush hour since most people will be going the opposite direction.

For me it's less about time and more about the length of the drive. Driving 60 miles through a metro 5 days a week in rush hour traffic (yes, I know it isn't heavy) isn't my cup of tea but it would be cake for some people so you just have to decide whether it worth it for you.

I like the people saying "Kansas Citians don't know rush hour". Hopefully they realize most people here have traveled during rush hour in big cities. I would never want to do it, and the situation kcmo explained sounds like pure torture to me.

Are there many rentals and houses under 250k in Parkville? When I was looking it didn't seem like things in that area were cheap by any means, but I was mostly looking in the newer neighborhoods around Parkville.

I apologize for my comment earlier. I've lived in places which have more severe rush hour traffic than Kansas City and it really was more of a way for me to express how jealous I am of how good you all have it in terms of traffic.

I personally can't stand more than about a 30 minute commute and what KCMO described sounds hellish.

No problem, I knew you probably didn't mean it like that so I shouldn't have singled out your post.

I do agree with your assessment of western Shawnee by the way. I personally prefer the areas close to highway 10 in Lenexa and Olathe but i think that's because I wasn't too impressed with the build quality in the Shawnee houses we saw while looking. Unfortunately most of the stuff south of Shawnee was out of our price range

Yeah, I wouldn't commute to Leawood from either Parkville OR Lee's Summit, if I had a choice.

Traffic in KC is seldom a hassle, unless there is a wreck (or there are even minimal flakes flying and inducing widespread panic), but I would always rather live as close as possible to work.
