I thought KCMO was "Paris of the Plains".

You're right, one of KC's nicknames is "Paris of the Plains". Especially in the middle of summer with all the tree-lined boulevards and majestic fountains, KC is truly an oasis in the middle of farm/flyover country.

I love those fountains. KCMO has more fountains than Paris or Rome. I have never been to KC but the fountains are the first thing I want to see there.

The fountains, sculptures, boulevards and greenspace ARE truly beautiful. Whenever somebody visits me for the first time from out of town, they're stunned that they had no idea we had stuff like that.

What do you think an out-of-towners view of KCMO is?

Let's just say KCI isn't necessarily a great first impression at all.
It gets a lot better after that.

My dad visited for the first time several months after I moved here, and he had, for some reason, a more gritty mental concept of it (he's not sure where he got his ideas, either...like he was thinking Detroit or something). Did not expect the greenspace. He's a lifelong rural dweller, minus some law school time in Chicago, but in general isn't a fan of urban cityscapes...likes his wide open spaces. He was pleasantly surprised by KC. I also think the BBQ and the Negro Leagues museum played no small part in winning him over.

Before I even knew about the fountains or anything else about KC, my own image was that it was one BBQ pit after another. I found out there was jazz in Kansas City. I didn't even know there were alot of fountains there until I saw pictures of KC from the tv show Cops.

I knew there was jazz, but the fountains and parks and relative "greenness" of the city were pleasant surprises.

Why else is it called "Paris of the Plains"?
