I could do without the sign in big white letters spelling out “Church of Scientology.”

Gee, wonder why you might not want to see a dorky sign like that, luzianne?

Have you seen it? It really ruins the skyline. You see Two Light and all the other lights, and then right there in with all the rest of it is the Church of Scientology sign. It's actually part of the KC skyline now.

You're right that it's a bit much. But give credit where it's due: the Scientologists poured a huge amount of money into that 8-story historic bank building, and now it's first-class all the way. You can even go in there and hang out, buy a few snacks and a coffee, connect to their Wifi and find a handsome corner to get some work done, and they won't even bother you. (Ok, they'll be super friendly at first, but then they'll leave you alone if you want.)

They also put on a fantastic "Winter Wonderland" in the parking lot on the northwest corner of that intersection, free of charge, with barely any effort to promote themselves in the process. Yes, the sign is off-putting, but let's also enjoy what a good neighbor they're turning out to be.

(And no, I'm not going to become a member or anything.)

Renderings released for the new $140 million HQ for Waddell & Reed who is moving their firm from Overland Park to 14th and Baltimore.

This is actually a really neat design I think.

This 18 story building is only a couple of blocks from several other towers that will also break ground this year.

The 25 story Strata Tower

13 story Hyatt House Hotel

15 story office building at 13th and Wyandotte

35 story Three Light

14 story Reverb still under construction

Loews Hotel will be wrapping up this year

While I'm not crazy about the Waddell Reed design, it's great to see KC break the mold when it comes to building bland glass towers. Strata (if and when it gets built) will be very nice too. If all the proposed buildings get built, the south loop will be a formidably dense part of downtown. It would be great to see all this lead to having the south loop capped in the not too distant future.

OK architects, hear me out. We want it to look like an off-kilter pile of enormous shipping containers which happen to be made of glass. Can you do that?
