My family may be relocating to KC this summer (it is one of 3 possibilities) and I am looking for some insight about how the area schools handle IEPs or 504s for kids with severe anxiety and chronic illness.
I read an article praising NKC High for their mental health initiative, but I know from experience that what looks good on paper isn't always put into practice.

We need a school that is safe, not overly competitive (she is easily stressed), understands and accommodates students who may have panic attacks or other anxiety issues, and helps students who are chronically ill keep up with school work (providing tutoring, which is an acceptable accommodation under federal laws).

Where we live now they refuse to recognize that her mental health and physical health are impacting her education. When she is absent for a doctor appointment or is too ill to attend school they don't help her learn what she missed so she gets behind and then her anxiety overwhelms her which triggers her fibro symptoms.
I also have fibro so I don't have the energy to fight with another school for the next 3 years just to make sure she doesn't fall through the cracks.

Also - budget is a concern. I know Blue Springs and Lees Summit are highly rated, but there are not many houses we can afford there. We are looking for something under 150k.

Any advice is really appreciated!

North Kansas City schools are fine schools, and I don't think you would have any problems there. Oak Park High (same school district) just added a therapy dog.

Thanks so much. A therapy dog might be excellent for her. Or it will make her want to visit the dog all day every day.

I've worked closely, professionally, with special ed programs all over the metro, both states, and NKC and Liberty are both districts whose SPED departments are top notch.

How about homeschooling instead? MO is one of the best states for homeschooling freedoms still!

I'm doing that this year. We are on OK and there are basically no regularions of homeschool here.
It's not working out at all. She's way behind and will have to repeat 10th grade.
The problems are that she has no drive to do what she should do when I'm the teacher and it becomes a power struggle. Also, my husband and I both work from home. He is on conference calls all day and she makes a lot of noise. I own am a voice actor so I have to stay up all night to work now so it's quiet and she's not needing attention.
