I knew that The Woodlands had been shut down and abandoned some years ago, but last I heard it was still there in a weathered and decaying state, awaiting disposition. Though I knew chances of it reopening and running again were slim, that was my hope.

So this morning I'm looking at Google maps and couldn't even find it at first - because it is mostly, if not totally demolished. Already replaced on the horse track side with....what else, in 2021?....an Amazon fulfillment center.

We left the KC area soon after the horse track opened in 1990, but had more fun at the Greyhound track in the months prior than at any other attraction anywhere else in the KC area. It opened in the fall of '89.

What a waste....what a sad loss. Just another chapter, I guess, in the the book of how and why America was a better place - a much more fun place - in 1989.

Will anyone else miss it like I do? I know most of you aren't old enough to have played it in its heyday or perhaps even to have ever been there. But it was lots of fun for a few years.

Oh we LOVED going to the dog races. Were you on Team Blendway or Team T-Bone? Blendway for us. We also used to go one weekend in the summer up to Omaha to go to Ak-Sar-Ben and just had a ball. Good times.

I did not know Amazon had taken over the Woodlands. Sad.

Blendway and Mr. T-Bone were both good, but Blendway more consistent - better record, as I recall.

My favorite by far was HB's Prince Red. He almost never let me down....but I'll never forget that shocker in January in that huge stakes race - forgot what they called it. They brought in a dog name Swedish Episode from back east who took it with ease. Prince Red even had his favorite post position - #8, and was the favorite by far. Thousands of jaws dropped when he lost.

Lone Lobo was another good one, but not in Prince Red's class.
