Hundreds outside Shawnee Mission East stage counterprotest to Fred Phelps - Kansas City Star (http://www.kansascity.com/703/story/1020190.html - broken link)

Stories like this make me proud of the KC Metro...

While I despise everything his group stands for and does, this is exactly what he wants.

His group wants to draw people out to protest against them. They want to get a stir out of people. So, the best thing to do with that group is to completely ignore them.

I agree. I wish the media would ignore him also.

The media SHOULD ignore him... however they won't. Several of his protest have been ignored by others and it doesn't change what they do... not to mention even if it is despicable and disgusting, I support their first amendment right too....

which is why i'm happy to see a larger group then his 20 or so protesters doing a counter-protest.

I had a 3 or 4 friends that went to protest.

I also support their right to do what they do but I still find it disgusting.

I'm all for kids excersizing their right to peacefully demonstrate. Ignoring groups like Westboro unfortunately doesn't make them go away, zealotry doesn't just give up. So I'm totally fine with a counterprotest, and I love that they took pledges for AIDS research for every minute those bigots were there.

I was there! It was amazing to see so many people out there. Over $9,000 was raised towards AIDS research! Without the WBC picketing at SME, we wouldn't of raised money at all.

To all, please understand this about the group at Westboro Baptist Church. They are not true Baptists, not even close. This is a group of profane bigots who bring nothing but trouble everywhere they go.
I've been a member of a Baptist church pretty much my entire life. While my current church does not mince words (you'll always know where we stand on any issue) you'd find us to be some of the most tolerant people you'd ever meet. This is because our Biblical mandate is to bring the message of Christ to all those around us. Not a message of hate. While we certainly have our standards, we do not judge others (God's job, not ours); rather recognize that people have to choose for themselves how they will live their lives.
Please do not lump all Baptists in with this crowd.

I wish all christians would behave as you do. Quite frankly though, if one holds the bible to be the unequivocal, literal word of God, then Fred Phelps and his ilk are being obedient to that word. Fortunately, most christians ignore or minimize those biblical passages that command followers to do evil things. I'd hate to think what life would be like if all those who called themselves christians obeyed every command in the bible.

Perhaps you can provide examples of God instructing His followers to do evil things? It has been my experience that people who make these kinds of statements regarding the Bible either take them out of context, do not understand them, or simply are looking for an excuse to me mad at God. I certainly hope that you do not fit into any of these categories.
