I received an e-mail 9 months ago from a tenant stating that they had moved out because there was moisture in the closet and the cabinets. This is the first we had heard of there being any problem with moisture in the apartment. The tenants lease was to expire the next month.

Within 14 days I sent the deposit settlement sheet along with a check for a partial refund of the deposit. The lease stated that there was a lease cancellation fee which was 50% of the monthly rent. There were also a few other items that were deducted from the deposit.

Yesterday, 9 months later, I received an e-mail from the former tenant demanding the remainder of the deposit.

Is there a time limitation on an issue like this? There hasn't been any correspondence with the tenant until now.

It would seem 30 days; however, you need to consult your attorney to CYA in case the former tenant attempts to sue. Hopefully all your correspondence and the partial return of deposit along with the itemized repair list deducted from the original security deposit has been sent and recorded via registered mail, return reciept.
