My wife is planning on getting her Phd at KU and I'm planning on getting my MA at Emporia State, so I have to commute. We want to live in Lawrence and only own one car, so living in the middle in Topeka or Ottawa is out of the question. (Right now neither of us owns a car, we live in China.)

I can take some of my classes online, but not all of them. Plus, I am gunning for a GTA position so I can get the tuition waiver and living stipend. Besides, my career goal is to be a community college teacher.

Also, before anyone chimes in "Why not go to KU?," well, to be honest, I had a rough sophomore year thanks to my major in beer and my double minor in girls and punk rock. So it's pretty unlikely I'll get in, but I'm still going to try!

So, long question short, does anyone make this commute? I'm wondering how doable it is. I've never had to commute via car before. I've always been lucky to be able ride my bike to my jobs.

Thanks!

I have known at least two people who lived in Emporia and worked in Kansas City. I would think its is not too uncommon to make that commute today. Isn't it cheaper to not buy a car and one of you live in a studio apt for the short run? That commute might round round out to be 200 miles a day on a car. The people I knew who were doing this were taking advantage of a high paying job in KC and living cheaply in Emporia. Both cities have Enterprise rental service so you could get away on weekends cheaper than car ownership.

According to gasbuddy.com, it'll be $14.50 a day for a 2005 Honda Civic (which is about the type of car I would plan on buying) for a 164-mile round-trip commute.

At worst
14.50 x 5= 72.5 per week.

72.5 X 4 = 290 per month.

I am hoping with the mix of online classes I can dodge going to campus every day. If I only go three times a week, it'll go down to $174 a month.

Of course, gas prices can go up between now and then. :-P
