My wife and I are considering relocating to Manhattan for a job opportunity.

We have two small children and are originally from NE, but are currently living in southern California. We're wanting to escape what we perceive as a lack of mid-western values and find someplace close to "home".

Can anyone provide any input about schools, crime, etc. about Manhattan? From what I've seen online it looks like a decent place, but neither of us have ever been there.

Thanks in advance

The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce sends out free relocation packets. Manhattan is nice, relatively safe, has the amenities most people look for, and has low employment. Here's the link to the Chamber's job website: Manhattan Jobs - NationJob.com Careers, Work & Employment opportunities in Manhattan, Kansas.

There is some crime, even violent crime. But in general if you're not hanging out in a bad neighborhood in the middle of the night looking for drugs you'd probably be fine. I've heard mixed reviews of the schools. The elementary schools are probably ok. I've heard that the high school is overcrowded, but it is closely affiliated with the university and you can get a good education there if you try.

You'd want to find out where the primarily student neighborhoods are and avoid buying a house there. Manhattan has some lovely neighborhoods and nice community parks. I'm biased, but I think the Konza prairie hiking trails can't be beat for pure natural beauty.

Hope I'm not too late to respond. I'm currently going to school in Manhattan. I like it there, it's a college town. There are a lot of bars and I would be careful in Aggieville on Wednesday and Thursday nights. For some reason they're worse than Friday and Saturday nights. I didn't hear of much violence happening there. However, I love aggieville. There's also a nice bookstore there called The Dusty Bookshelf. Which I love. Sorry if that didn't help too much, I just saw Manhattan in a thread and had to click it.
