I grew up in Great Bend but that was about 100 years ago! I still go back to visit about 3 times every year. On the apartment thing, contact the chamber of commerce or a real estate agent. If I remember correctly, there are not very many apartment complexes but lots of duplexes etc.. If you find some, let me know where they are as there are still some areas that are not as desirable as others.
Public transportation,,,hmmm, there is a bus that takes the senior citizens around but no regular buses or taxis.
What takes you to GB?

It was a great place to grow up but as a "grown up", I don't think I would like it. I have found the fabulous state of Utah and don't plan on leaving! Great Bend is quite conservative but I think the people are still really friendl. There are a few bars and clubs and too many crappy restaurants for sure combined with all then usual fast food options.
There is a-health club, nice public court tennis courts. A nice big park on the north west side of town called Veterans Park that has decent jogging trails, playgrounds, a small lake and baseball diamonds.
Something that I enjoy now but did not do as a child is visit the Cheyenne Bottoms area. It is the largest wetlands/bird migratory spot in the US. Lots of walking paths and a nice visitors center too.
Let me know how it goes!
