Hello everyone. My husband and I are moving to Kansas next month from Washington State. We have started pursuing organic farming just the past 4 years and would like to continue this venture in Kansas. Having so much agriculture in Kansas, where would some good soil be or small farming communities that aren't as touched by all the sprays, pesticides, etc... (if there is such a thing)? We are able to locate pretty much anywhere in the State. Thank you so kindly for your help.

Try Great Bend....central location and a type of "crossroads" for transportation etc. Lots of young families and not a ton of organic options.

If you'll be using a green house and the high tech, I guess it could be managed most places. Have you asked your question in the "Garden" area of this forum? It might be more helpful. It was a horrible summer with record breaking heat and drought in our area (southeast - but check other areas for recent temps and rainfall). Kansas is very dry and windy with a lot of blowing dust. It had never dawned on me that weed killer residue would blow in the wind, land on my plants and kill them. I don't want to discourage you but Kansas is not a green state. I am from Michigan and it was SO easy to grow things there. I lived in Salina, Junction City and Manhattan and couldn't get anything to grow there. Right now we are in Zone 6 and when we got rain and the summer wasn't as hot, I did well because the difference between Zone 5 and 6 really is BIG. This is an extremely helpful website: http://www.ksre.ksu.edu/p.aspx I know land can be cheaper in Kansas but there is a reason for that. Do your research!

I grew up in NE Kansas around Sabetha. The soil isn't quite like that in parts of IA, IL, IN, etc., but we always had a large, bountiful garden. If you can find some bottom land that doesn't flood, you'll do great. Our garden wasn't bottom land, btw, but it still did great, as did our orchard.
