We are looking for a place in the midwest to retire in a few years. Recently we have become interested in some land in Atchison County KS. Any information about the area would be appreciated.

We are looking for someplace rural but with good access to ammenities such as shopping, hospitals, airports, etc. We would like property where we can have some chickens, bees and maybe a few goats, etc.

Atchison is a town of around 10,000 that is located right along the Missouri River. The area has some jobs, but not a lot in the way of shopping. It does have a good hospital I believe. KCI airport would be around a 35-40 minute drive. Cost of living should be extremely low because real estate is very cheap. Rural areas around Atchison are located within 5 minutes of town. The KC metro is a short drive to the SE.

Thanks for the great summary of the town. We visited there last week and really liked the place. I guess I'm asking if there is any reason we wouldn't want to relocate to the area - meth labs, people unfriendly to outsiders, etc! Our impression was good. We liked the rural nature of the town while still having groceries and necessities available near by and serious shopping with in 45 minutes (KC & St.J).

Yes, St. Joseph would be a shorter drive compared with the KC metro.
I am not sure about any drug problems in the area.
The newer part of town is on the north and west side. The older part of the town is closer to the river with more of the houses in disrepair.
Generally, Atchison and the county itself does not see a lot of in-migration of people from other parts of the country. Therefore, it may take a little time to meet some of the people. However, most are quite friendly.
The rural areas are mostly corn and soybean farms with occasional orchards near the Missouri River. Some of the small towns can be VERY rural.
Bascially, I would take a trip to the city and see if you like it or not.
