I don't live there anymore, so I really can't say about gangs. I do not feel endangered when I am in Dodge, if that helps. I also can't recommend a hotel, as I've never stayed in one there. There is a brand new one at the casino, can't think of what it's called. There are quite a few, from Mom 'n Pop type places to big chain hotels. Google would be more help than me. Most of them are right on the highway, with the exception of the casino.

Assuming you already went though so just posting for future use. The casino is a hit or miss. The Casino has had several problems since it opened (none of witch the Dodge Globe ever printed and left the Hutchinson News to do so instead). The new arena is nice when it has events even if the tickets are overpriced. The gang problem is the worst out of the southwest Kansas towns and the FBI finally had to step in and arrest 22 people, but they usually don't cause problems in the north and west ends of town just east and south. I have had a gun pointed at me in broad daylight just stopping at a stop sign so stay away from shady looking neighborhoods.

Boot Hill can be a bit of a rip off when it isn't tourist season or if they aren't having an event. It is way expensive for what you git. Dodge City does have a really small and nice Zoo/park in a not so nice part of town. They also have a really nice miniature racetrack for a city of its size. It's too bad they didn't play the layout of the town very well and have such high property and sales tax because with the Casino and Boot Hill Dodge City could be a shopping and entertainment destination instead of having a half empty mall with businesses that require you to speak Spanish as well as losing Target, Sams Club, and Home Depot to Garden City.

Empire - just wondering, what problems does the casino have? I don't live in DC anymore, but my parents did fill me in on the recent FBI arrests.

The mall has been half empty since I went to Northwest Elementary. My dad told me that some people/company from Canada owns the mall and charges a crazy amount for rent. Downtown pretty much caters to Spanish speakers only.

If you pass thru Garden City, the Zoo is wonderful.
