The zoo is definitely well taken care of. My only change to it would be to possibly try to make the cage for the mountain lion a bit bigger. Other than that, it's a nice little zoo. They've always got a few zoo keepers there willing to answer any questions. The park right beside it may not have anything except a train and a few picnic tables, but it still remains my favorite because it's in a quiet location and sits along the river. It is also quite pretty during the fall.

I lived in Emporia for a year when I was 3 and have only been back once when I was maybe 15 or 16. Anyway, one thing I remember was a little train in a park that you could ride on. Does this still exist?

Also, I remember a store with big plate glass windows and dozens of ceiling fans hung in the windows. Does anyone know the name of this store or where it used to be?

They still have the little train that runs in-season at the park out by the zoo. Did you go to the zoo? It is really a nice little zoo and so well kept up. I don't know what store you are talking about since I have not been in the downtown area. Hostess just closed putting over 400 people out of work which cannot be good news for the community. They had lost many of the Tyson jobs when they stopped slaughtering the animals here. They need industry like yesterday.

They should just move to JOCO and get jobs THERE. The state of KS doles out all the corporate welfare to JOCO and really could care less about most of the state.

So, is that what is happening? Emporia is really nice and has the feel of a very small town. It is clean and the people are decent that we have seen and met. Educational opportunities at both Emporia State and Flint Hills Technical College abound and empty building for any business that would want to come in. It is SO much nicer here than many places in KS but they are still losing ground. It was not the best feeling to buy a house and two weeks later have Hostess begin liquidation. I like adventure and this move looks like it will fit the bill. What 2 more years with Brownback? I hope they go quickly.
