It misunderstood that the Carhops at Sonic get paid minimum wage. This is because in the past they were however, that has changed. They make server wages. So, please tip your carhops if this is the only reason you don't.

When did the change occur? Was it a law that changed?

Default RE: Change

I have not been working there long so all I know for certain is that in 2010 carhops made minimum wage now they don't. I am not aware of a change in the law just in the policy. This is post is for no other intention than to educate those who just didn't know.

At sonic in South Dakota most carhops make $7.75. I used to be an assistant manager at sonic so I can explain how the system works. The sonic is allowed to pay the carhops a server wage, but if the amount of tips plus the server wage doesn't add up to minimum than the store MUST pay the difference. I worked at sonic for four and a half years and was a manager for two. So, make sure that your wage adds up right!

Haha back in SD I'd say around 80% didn't tip their carhop, but for some people I don't blame them. Some of the carhops can be pretty rude. I mean, I worked there for four years and definitely wouldn't tip some of them.

The sonic that I work at does not pay the difference and I hope that I never run into a rude carhop. I believe in customer service and treat each customer like a friend, with or without a tip. My whole intention was to squash the rumor that carhops don't need tips because I could not be more grateful for the tips I receive and the friends I make. I love my job.

When I lived in Kansas, I always tipped the car hops. However, here in Indiana (which has less Sonics), the locals were shocked when I did. I think they are too use to Rally's...

This is still true in Kansas. It is based on the pay period, not on tips earned in a given day. For instance, if you get paid every two weeks, and make no tips one week but good tips the second week, you don't get paid the difference in wages for the first week if the second week tips made up for the lack of tips in the first week. If you work some of your shifts NOT as a server, you must be paid at least minimum wage.

There are exceptions for young teen workers.
