See what you get when you cut it to the bone.

Experts caution that a year's increase does not indicate a trend, but also point out that Kansas has recently cut funding for mental health problems.

Calling suicide a "funding" problem is really a stretch as it is just more complicated than that: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/03/he...n-us.html?_r=0 The one person that I actually know in KS that tried to commit suicide was under care for mental health issues at the time. Her prescription medication for her depression more likely than not was the cause. We did have a physician up the street that killed himself and I had heard that he had lost a lot of money in the stock market. Another person in that town killed himself when he was under investigation for criminal activity. Many, many people have mental health issues and they do not seek help. Anyone that feels suicidal can call 911 or go into the emergency room.

A whole 2 data points?

How do we know that 2011 wasn't abnormally low?
When were the funding cuts?

Basically, the article is so badly written and lacking in information that I cannot even come to a conclusion one way or another.

It's pretty sad how bad the journalism in this country has gotten.

You are absolutely correct that suicide correlates highly to bad economic conditions.

I'm pretty sure suicide rates are probably up nationwide, and I doubt that Kansas leads the pack.

YEah, but our drive-by poster doesn't appear to have the guts to post facts, just pot-shots.

If we can't get some validation of the history and claim, perhaps this thread should be deleted as incendiary?

I mean, what would occur if I were to just troll by other state forums and claim they are the leading pedophiles etc?
