So I'm looking at moving to Kansas sometime in early 2014. I'm wondering if anyone has insight into where I'd have the best chance at getting a job? My background is basic office work (clerical, admin, reception).

I don't have any plans for where I want to live yet. That's kind of why I'm asking the question....I'm trying to figure out where I might have the best chances of finding a job. Ideally, I'd like to be as close to Ft. Riley as possible but I know that might not be feasible in terms of actually getting a job relatively quickly.

I would look at those kinds of jobs in the medical field, maybe in Topeka at Stormont Vail.

Unfortunately, I don't have any prior experience working in the medical field even as clerical/reception and I've found it can be very difficult to break into that particular type of job without previous experience. But I'll keep that in mind!

Most of the jobs in Kansas are going to be in the Kansas City/Johnson County area or Wichita. Jobs outside of those two urban areas are going to be few and far between.

I'd definitely consider Manhattan. And Kansas State is a good suggestion too. I'm probably going to move first and then do some serious job hunting.

There generally aren't many openings at K-State in clerical. Maybe cafeteria work. If moving into the JC/Manhattan area, price rentals prior to moving as they can be expensive if in a fairly decent neighborhood and both towns have undesirable areas. You might be able to get something in retail. A good job source is: www.Kansasworks.com, you can put in a city/zip and then a mileage of from 5 miles to more to get a list of jobs in the area, make sure you check the box for both those jobs listed with KansasWorks (state employment office) and "other" sources. Keep in mind that jobs outside the areas that Sco listed are generally low paying: retail, eldercare, working with people with DD, factory labor that pays from $7.25 to a high of $10.00 which most do not pay. Fort Riley is extremely hard to get a job on but you could look at NAF (non-appropriated funds jobs which pay less than Federal Civil Service). I would check the temp agencies in the area as a best bet. Take cash to tide you over.

Jobs in Manhattan are going to pay at or near minimum wage. Any jobs available at Kansas State are going to be snatched up by students or faculty spouses. A rural college town is basically the worst place in any state to look for a job.
