Hi I am moving to Pittsburg, KS and I am seeking a gifted school for my 11 year old that is in 6th grade. I have searched the web and I have not been able to see any gifted schools in the area. Also Can anyone tell me the school rating for St Mary's private school?

Thanks,

I was a gifted kid in a program. Not sure that it did anything wonderful for me...
I'm raising a couple of gifted kids (12 and 14). There are no such things as gifted programs, much less entire schools, in small-town western Kansas so I homeschool one and the other is thriving in traditional public school.

Not what you wanted to hear, I realize. Just throwing out some other ideas.

Its not likely a city with a population that small will have an entire school dedicated to gifted students. The top performing grade school might be in Girard about eight miles away.

I went to Frontenac elem/Jr./Sr high and we have a gifted program. Frontenac is the smaller town to the north of Pittsburg. Great little community. My girlfriend went into the gifted program. It was small. They usually have a small class period where the meet do practice ACT/SAT extra work, focus in on test scores and scholarships. They don't offer "AP" classes per say but the high school allows you to knock out some college credits your senior year. They do take out of district students and have been growing recently. Wish you luck! A good friend of mine is a counselor in the Jr. High in Pittsburg and would love to talk to you more about it. PM me I can give you the phone number or you could drop in and discuss it. His kids go to Frontenac and he taught there for a couple of years. Now employed in USD 250, he could give you the ins and outs of both.

Actually my Girlfriend took a few courses and I had a couple of friends that went into St. Mary's. They have more in the way of Forensics, choir, no band, solid athletics, good academics but....some of the teachers were not open to discussion. Most was very much lecture take notes take tests. Also religious courses I believe are required, though I think they had one Muslim kid that went there. They grade on a harder scale. I believe 94 was an A 84 B 74 C 64 D etc. So the gpa was harder but she says the classes weren't all that harder. Great community whichever of the three you choose.

Many thanks for the information on Frontenac. I will check the town and school out when I visit next month. It is important to me to have my child mentally stimulated so that he can grow to be what ever he chooses. Gifted children such as Bill Gates. and Steve Jobs have a place in the world and provide a service to the world so we need to provide environments that foster their growth and talents. Some school have separate gifted classes and other just provide AP plans to keep the kids challenged. It is a disservice to the kids to not challenge them. In my son's current school even though he is in 6th grade the school required that he do the ACT's as his class is so advanced. They currently do eight grade math and English.

Thanks for the support and information.
