Cheryl Unruh, author of Flyover People, has published a new book:

QP | the writings of Cheryl Unruh

When the world closes up shop, when the sky turns from blue to black for the very last time, when the final poem is written and read, this is where I want to be - out in my beloved Flint Hills.

I just finished the book. So the blizzard barricades on I-70 begin at about Russell. When I saw those in Hays when I visited in 2012, there was no doubt I was not in Ohio anymore. Another surprise was finding prickly pear cactus growing wild in an allotment. I did not expect to see this east of the 100th meridian.

I can not say enough good things about the flat land and the roads that are laid out on a north-south, east-west grid. As I was attempting to drive back to my motel from the post office, I realized by the direction of the sun that I was headed in the wrong direction. This is not so easy to do in northeast Ohio, where roads are laid out in ever-changing random directions, and there are elementary school aged children who have never seen a sunny day.

I am seriously considering moving to Kansas, but I have a career to finish, and a mother suffering from dementia that needs me to handle her finances, first.
