I'm moving to Dodge City on Monday. I called the car insurance company with the small green reptile representing it for a car insurance quote on our car. $160 a month? What? Our car insurance with the same insurer was only $60 a month in New Mexico. We moved to eastern Washington and it went up to $120 a month. Now $160 a month in Kansas. Really?

You, of course, know that your rate has to do with a lot of things like credit rating, vehicle, your accident history if you have one, and your age. The other thing that might contribute is the number of illegal immigrants as we get-and-run here more than any place else we have lived making the area more of a risk. I would still shop around for a better rate. I would contact an agent in Dodge City to get a quote and if you get a cheaper one, tell the reptile that you would like to stay with them but you found a rate of $$$$ and could they offer something to you for less. Can't hurt and might help as many don't like losing customers.

Giving you our rates wouldn't help since we are older and know better than to own a newer vehicle in KS since the personal property tax is higher than we want to pay.

I'm guessing you are making payments on the car and don't own it? If you did own it, going with a higher deductible on comprehensive and collision can help.

Here is the KS auto insurance shopper's guide. Garden City may be comparable to Dodge. There is a lot of variation in auto insurance rates, so it is good to shop it. Don't cancel your current policy for now (of course). Allstate is a very large insurance company and they may be able to give you a better rate. A lot depends on the agent. Safeco might be good as it is owned by Liberty Mutual, which is a very large insurance company. Avoid Farm Bureau as they will be overpriced.

Yep. Shop around is great advice.

Coverage may not be apples to apples, not sure what you are getting quoted.

Rates in some parts of KS have been going up due to hail storms so that could be affecting things.

My Yearly insurance just came up and covers 3 cars worth maybe 60k in total including a young driver.

I'm paying a little over 3k a year.

Torn, I have to break it to you. There are A LOT of people that hate KS due to regional rivaly or politics.

Expect to see some really bizarre, uneducated and otherwise stupid partisan attacks in the forum that is instead intended to educate people. Sorry.

When in doubt, just ask for substantiated data on a question you have. That tends to thin out the nutjobs.

I've been happy with American Family. We have them for our homeowner's and vehicle insurance. We have never had a problem with them paying when we had a claim. I pay $80 a month for full coverage on a 2013 SUV. I would say that's because I have a good driving record and am not a young driver, but my son only pays $90/month for full coverage; he is 25 and drives a 2005 SUV.

We pay around $100/mo using geico for 2 cars and 2 adults, but only 1 adult on 1 car. Also our cars are only worth about $10000 for both. We are in NE Kansas.
