This place is pretty cool.

You may find it especially amusing as an atheist....*shrug*....I'm not catholic and I still liked the history and architecture.

It's free and super close to I-70 sooooo, not like it's any real investment.

Konza prairie hiking trails, Church in Victoria is incredible, I myself am an atheist as well, but I went to a mass there once a few years ago, but just doing a tour of the church is incredible, like something you would find in Europe. Free State Brewry in Lawrence is cool. State Capitol in Topeka is newly remodeled and incredible. Eisenhower museum. All great stops.

Too bad your travels won't take you down to Hutch. Have breakfast at the Carriage Crossing in Yoder--and that's about as Amish as it gets, they even have a buggy parking area--then hit the Kansas Cosmosphere, which when I was a little lad was just a planetarium. When next I saw it, the first thing that told me it had grown was the authentic SR-71 in the entry area. Remember the old Apollo 13, the one that nearly didn't make it back? Still has the burn pitting from re-entry, take a close look. Plus a lot else--and it's all a few blocks west of where I lived in the 1960s. Bonus: work your way back up to I-70 not on the Turnpike, but using K-177 through the Flint Hills, which I am told is now dotted with art galleries to add to a very pleasant rural drive through cowboy country. Takes twice as long to change a tire there as anywhere else, because of the number of people who stop to help, and even if one doesn't need help, one must not be rude of course, so there is the standard conversation (in Kansas we call this 'visiting with,' as in "It was nice visiting with you").

My old homeland. Brownback can bankrupt it, but nothing he can do will break my affinity for Kansas.

Gella's in downtown Hays is about the perfect lunch stop between The Front Range and KC.
