Husband is entertaining a job offer for the community college. We are in a small town near Wichita and moved out of the Larned area (with feedlot stench) about 20 years ago, before kids.

We are wanting to be within 0-30 minutes of work and are looking at Garden City, Holcomb, and Larkin. From the outside, Larkin seems the best school, but it is the farthest away.

Where would you live if you had a high schooler and an older elementary kid. Looking for strong academics (especially STEM), strong band program (with a jazz band), pretty good girl's basketball program. One of the kids is in SpEd with 1-1 supports (Autism), so that is also a factor.

Any insight?

I would go with the largest district out there. What ever problems Garden City has might be regional. Garden City schools are not all that good but the city itself might offer a few more amenities to keep children occupied like a YMCA,Public Library programs, and local music stores to teach kids private music lessons.

Garden City Public Schools are only terrible for those students who don't want to improve or learn. There are no local music stores for kids to take lessons, but the high school has a large music program with several orchestras, choirs, a marching band, a wind ensemble, and two jazz bands. Holcomb is a better quality school, but they don't really have an arts program, and Lakin doesn't have a jazz band.
