Mathguy blew a fuse on KS 49th in per capita public lands, was 50th for decades => must have lost population.

I lived in the ShowMe state, 1981-85. I found it difficult to communicate outside of work, except with non-natives & college-educated. Thus ShowMe => as my dad used to say doesn't have sense enough to pour pxxx out of a boot with the directions printed on the heel. Thus, I would turn their boot over for them & SHOW THEM THE DIRECTIONS.

Well I don't know how much bearing this has on anything, but I'd never been to Kansas until last summer, when I drove through the state and purposely spent the night in Topeka, in an old hotel next to the capital building. In the morning I went for a walk around downtown and encountered Topeka High School.

Anyone who has ever seen that school will back me up here.

That's the prettiest, most inspired looking public high school I've ever laid eyes on.

So at some point, maybe in the past, education in Topeka Kansas was absolutely first priority. Maybe that success has carried on. I think any student entering Topeka High School would feel the auspicious history of that school, and be inspired to do well.
