I am moving out of Kansas. In 10 days...

One of my best friends is transferring to college in Albuquerque NM and in march asked if I wanted to go. I am leaving because the opportunity has arisen, had it not though I would still be happy here.

I live in Hutchinson, and while yes there isnt an abundance of nightlife or things to do I love it here. All of my family is in or just an hour or so away from here, and Ive been here my whole life.

Albuquerque is a beautiful place though, with great people and great weather and alot of opportunities. Although I enjoy living here, aside from the comm. college there is not a whole lot of opportunities for someone here.

Maybe someday I will be back, I could see that happening. Then again though, who knows? Thats the beauty of leaving is that it could be the best time of your life and if not...home is always here.

We have lived in other states and we are being taxed to death here in Kansas and they claim to have a lower cost of living but we aren't seeing that anymore. Unless you live in or near a metro area there just aren't any services and you just can't afford to drive 90 miles one way to shop for something that you need especially with items for home improvement. Once you get used to having services and shopping available the little towns become a pain really quick.

Just my two cents. We moved to Kansas from Cali 20 years ago to raise our children. It is an excellent place for that - Johnson County - Blue Valley - specifically. Now that that is done, we are done as well! It's either too hot, too cold, too humid or too windy for a majority of the year. I'm looking forward to being in a place, New Mexico, where I can enjoy the outdoors and not feel cooped up for 10 months of the year. Adios!

That sums up the weather in Kansas very well - "Too". It's always too something!

The weather is not as bad as where I came from, Michigan, this is a state that sucks hard for weather, and home prices are dropping like a rock. Todays bargains are tomorrows high prices.
The taxes in Kansas are high and there is no way to argue that they are not. You do not get anything for your tax dollars in Kansas.
Older homes are considered good tax base at 1500 a year. I had 80 acres in Michigan a new 30x40 pole barn, and a 2000 sf cape cod. I paid 1433 a year and thought that was high.
It is so deep in the system the only thing that could be done is to vote in a homestead exemption. Not to many people look to live out their life in Kansas, most work there and look to retire somewhere else. So I think they do not try to make it better. The only other problem I see in Kansas, is the Christians, The bible thumper 's
fight anything that they deem to be "not Christian" They stood outside the factory's and handed out fliers giving "21 reasons not to vote for a casino" I think the biggest reason was the church may not be able to fleece a few more $ out of the sheep.
I have no problem with bible thumper's as long as they keep their talking snake crap to them self and preach it at the pulpit.
If you don't like tittie bars don't go, not to hard, no pun intended.

That's the one thing that would daunt me a little bit about moving back: those who are aggressive about religion. I get very icy with anyone who comes to my door with the goal of getting me to edit my beliefs to match theirs, or whose opening convo line is 'so, what church do you go to?' (assumption: everyone goes to some church), anything of that sort. I don't think it would be as big a problem in a larger town, but in a smaller town it would be hard probably being the only non-Christian.

Funny how quite a few of mention 'overzealous' Christians. I don't know where they are! We would like to find a church to attend. First off, apparently no one bothers to invite people to church here. Granted, when we first moved in, a couple of neighbors said come to their churches. Went to one, not for us, too legalistc (I like blue jeans and a drink now and then Went to other when the neighbors weren't there...I told her if they had been there, at least someone would have spoken to us.
And that scenario has happened more than once.

Maybe it is a midwestern thing, kind of like gravy & meat, to not speak of 'religion' in general. But back South, the first thing out of most people's mouth after introductions was, you go to church any where??? And more times than not, if you were a visitor at a church, you wouldn't leave without at least a smile and good morning, and often a lunch invite.

I have even asked people where they go...they will say..but never even reply, why don't you visit, we'd love to have you
I guess these so called bible thumpers are too busy with their agendas to even take the time to think about asking a stranger to church....hmmm.

Well we will keep looking. Oh how I wish there was an Acts 29 church or similiar...

Perhaps that's a Wichita thing. While I wouldn't class Wichita as a big city, it's certainly one of Kansas's largest urban areas, and the larger the urban area I think the less of it one sees. I go by what my family in Chase County tells me. Of course, that only covers that portion of the Flint Hills. But since if I returned to Kansas, my first choice would be the Flint Hills and the second would be Hutch, that would factor a bit for me.

I would doubt, however, that it's anything like what people have told me about the South. I'd have real trouble living there, despite the fact that I generally like and get along with Southerners. It's always different when one lives there (wherever 'there' is).

Hi-I moved out of Kansas in 2000, and am glad that I did. I left behind my family, including a 14 months old grandson, who is now almost 9, but I am glad that I moved to Ca. I live in the San Joaquin Valley-between Fresno and Bakersfield, CA and it is a lovely place to live.

I have been back to Kansas, over the years, and am glad that I am out here. Humidity is low, heat and rent is high, but who cares!!! I am out of the cold, now.

Probably won't go back to live, just for a visit.

Thanks-johnslove2000
