More details? How far are you willing to drive keeping in mind that gas is expensive? "Low" rent means different things to different people so do you have a range on that? To me, the whole area is grossly overpriced. My husband has an interview in Manhattan this week (we have escaped from SE KS, today actually) but housing is so expensive and pay so low that we are questioning whether to consider Manhattan. Pay is like SE KS but with a higher cost of living. You should be getting a housing allowance and housing office on post should have suggestions.

Good post. Housing prices in Manhattan, both renting and buying, are way too high for the average wage. Some of the outlying towns have better prices but then you have the price of gas to contend with. Not to mention how expensive propane is now, if you live somewhere without natural gas. As much as I like Manhattan, it's tough to figure out how to survive here if you're not a high wage-earner.
