Anyone live there? From there? Know people there? My dad is retiring soon, and so my parents are thinking of moving there for a quiet, quaint town. They are very 'comfortable', will pay cash for whatever. I was just curious about the town. I've never been there. Pros/cons?

Atchison has a lot of history to it....and many beautiful Victorian homes!
And it's also famous for being a city with a lot of haunted houses (well, they're supposedly haunted, anyway).

I've been thru there several times in the past. It's nice...but there are some areas of Atchison that have definitely seen better days.---But you could say that about a lot of older cities (be it in Kansas or elsewhere).

Is it a place to retire? Mmmm.....I don't know. Maybe. It all depends on the individual(s) and his/her/their needs.

Very scenic town. Realestate should hold its value very well in nice neiborhoods or in the country. Very good hospital.
Also close to historic town of weston. Very pretty country.

Thank you! Just trying to get a feel for it. My folks like it, they like the history around it, the pretty homes. They've visited, I haven't yet. So I'm curious. And I worry about my parents, can't help it. Though they are set and doing fine. Thanks everyone.

MtnBike;

I was there YEARS ago, and loved it. If they like hot summers and cold winters they won't have any problems. We plan on returning to visit next year, as we return NW. The people are friendly, and while it is small, there are larger areas within an easy drive. Best of wishes to your folks.

I live outside of Atchison, but work there. It has some really beautiful old homes, but it also has lovely new ones also. It is close to Kansas City, St. Joe, Topeka. Atchison has alot of history to it. Has a new hospital going in, also the new bridge over the Missouri River. If your parents move to Atchison, I hope they like it.
