I grew up in Cherryvale and attended Lincoln Central grade school from 1960-1968. My grandparents farmed a small place 3 miles North of town where my three younger brothers and myself spent many happy, adventurous times fishing and hunting quail and rabbits. My father was minister at the First Christian Church(Roger Adamson) for many years. Grandpa,Grandma, and Dad are all buried in the local cemetery. I still visit there when I visit my Mother in Independence.

Yes, Big Hill is nice. My teens went there on a recent visit to Cherryvale and loved it. My daughter wants to go back.

Default Abandoned Meat Packing plant question

Do you or anyone else remember the owner operator of the old meat packing plant? It closed around 1941 I've heard due to the government's office of price administration.

Back in the 80's i ran down a rumor about a World War Two Aircraft. The aircraft was a P-38 Lightning. A twin engine fighter. These aircraft were stationed at Cherryvale.
The story was that a British pilot here for traing had for some reason had to bail out. Thepoor felows parachute got caught on a tailsection and he eventually fell to his death. The airplane continued on for awhile before diving into the ground at a high rate of speed.(my part of the story is now) A Belgium couple were hard at work in their farmyard when out of nowhere the aircraft smashed into the ground right at the intersection of their driveway. The concussion and explosion from the crash left the in shock. Very shortly neighbors began to arrive and after finding no pilot some grabbed them a souvenir. The military arrived and hauled the wreckage awy and the poor Belgium couple eventually calmed down.
I discovered my part after going down that way and asking around. As luck would have we came upon some Quail hunters just entering the field. The leader was about 70 years old and told me the total story.
A fun afternoon in the fall. Thanks
