I spent 20 years in Emporia and couldn't wait to leave. Mean-spirited best describes the atmosphere. Corrupt, best describes all sources of power in the town. They will wave at you on the country highway and talk bad about you to the next person they run into. The city and county official will help their family and friends, but not those in the community that need the help the most, because they don't "KNOW" them. Even the university can't keep a president for very long. A poem one of my children wrote sums it up: I have a nightmare, where those who commit crimes are protected, those who report crimes are victimized, and those who vow to uphold justice lie. This nightmare has a place, a location, a name. This place is Emporia, KS. He was 12 when he wrote this opinion. One of the main reasons why we moved. He's a very perceptive child.
