As a percentage my property taxes were higher in TX. I'm only paying more because it's a more expensive home.

The only thing that bothers me is the tax on the cars....and the state income tax. Two things I didn't have to pay in TX.

My home state of Missouri is pretty similar to KS with regard to taxes.

Relative to what we paid in Chicago, I think our property taxes are noticeably lower in Kansas. In Chicago, we had a half acre in the suburbs, and a 40-year old traditional home. In Kansas, we have three acres and a bigger house that is 4 years old, and not as traditional. Our property taxes here are only $1500 a year more than the current taxes on our old house.

Personal property tax is another animal. The taxes on vehicles are just crazy, many times more than we paid in Illinois. I've always wondered if the tax on vehicles discourages people from buying new cars or trucks here.

Missouri has much lower property taxes compared to Kansas with the exception of a few suburban cities.

That is because Illinois does not levy taxes on cars. The City of Chicago does for cars via the city sticker which was $75 a year but there is no ad valoreum or PP taxes. When I lived there I paid $20 to renew my plates. But you don't get anything for nothing. They more than make up for it through the gasoline tax which is among the highest in the country.

I can't remember for sure but I know the year factors into it.

My '02 Suburban was ~$230 for taxes and license. My '06 Town & Country was ~$290. And this is payable at time of renewal. Every June I shell out ~$530 to keep my two plain jane cars on the road.

In Texas it was $50-$70 per car.

In Missouri your license and pp tax on cars are separate. You pay your taxes at the first of the year and your license whenever it is time to renew. So the pain is spread out a little more.

This is true. The percentage is lower.

What I was refering to is the fashion that they do the taxing is similar. Where places like Texas don't have State income tax or personal property taxes on cars or other similar items, both MO and KS have both.

I remember being an 18 year old kid with a shiny jetski. It was sitting there in the garage in the freezing cold December when I got the letter in the mail from the county assessor saying I had to pay my personal property tax on it. This was my introduction to the real world.
