In California, almost no one has a basement, yet it seems like every house in Kansas has a furnished basement. I just checked on Yahoo Real Estate and the first 10 houses I checked in Kansas had fully furnished basements. Is it for, like, tornado safety or something?

Yes. It helps that in few places in Kansas is a basement impractical for groundwater reasons. The desire for a basement is a very Kansan trait; when we went house shopping in eastern Washington I instructed our agent on the futility of showing us any home lacking a basement.

Far as I'm concerned, it's retarded to build a house without a basement anywhere that the geology will permit one, twisters or no twisters. What better way to extend the space of a home?

It's an inexpensive way to add square feet, you don't have to have space to build out or materials to build up. I'm not even sure unfinished basements are taxed as much on property tax, because they don't count as living space. And, they make good storm shelters for tornado season.

What they said.... As well as when used as finished living space they make for a much more efficient space when compared with a second story. Cool in the summer and warmer in the winter.

I'm guessing it's because of the hazard of tornadoes.

Not necessarily....I lived in the Kansas City area most of my life and always had a basement, moved to Oklahoma, the HEART of tornado country and there isn't a basement to be found around here. Something to do with the soil and the expense of digging a foundation in it. I'd love to have a basement, even if you don't finish it it's great for storage.
