Help! I'm relocating from lovely safe state where I grew up to Topeka, KS because of the economy! The hubby will go to school in Lawrence for his masters and Im working in Topeka. I need an idea of where to live that is affordable and SAFE!
We only have one car and hubby doesnt have license yet, so I was thinking somewhere on the west side of Lawrence in walking distance to school for him. But, that adds commute time to my work day (which is already a full day) in Topeka. Maybe there is a bus he can take to KU from Lawrence? Anyways, he doesn't start until August, we may be able to do temp housing for a few months until we know the area better and can commit to a lease.
Anyone have any ideas?! Oh, and my car has a lot of miles on it, so another reason to live in Topeka until we get some checks under our belt. But the reviews for housing all look soooooooooo bad and scarry. Anyone have any ideas of good affordable housing in either Topeka or Lawrence?!!!! Your help is much appreciated!

If it were me, I'd live in Lawrence as you said. Given the option not to, I wouldn't live in Topeka. No need for me to list the reasons, you will soon see them clearly.

It's a very good idea if you can do some temp housing to get a feel for either place before committing to a lease. However, there are few places in Lawrence that would be intolerable for the term of a short lease.

Best of luck to you!!

Iv'e been looking now more in the Lawrence area. I saw Crecsent Apt's are affordable and near the school/shopping etc, they are on W. 24th st. I like Mass. st area as well but doubt I can afford the rents there to begin with. I like the idea of temp housing thats furnished, but something affordable is hard to find. Most I saw were $750 a month.

Topeka County Club is a OK area you would have to give me the Apt name, not for sure about the College Villas, I personally would stay away from those apts.

You might check out the Villa West Apts, it says they have short term leasing available.

I found Fairway apartments in the country club area on 2933 SW Central Park Ave. There rents are cheap and they do month to month. Any thoughts?! Thanks!

As far as the Fairway apartments go, I don't know much about them. As far as the area goes, it's not the best but it's not the worst either. It's next to a retirement community.

You might also check out these as well, it's called the Warren House, it's in a better area, next to a couple of other apartment complexes.
They offer Month to Month and even weekly rates.

Housing is much cheaper in Topeka, so I would live there if money is tight. I don't know of any public transportation that runs from Topeka to Lawrence though, so that might not work if your husband doesn't drive. If you want temporary housing until you decide, you should try to find a furnished sublease in Lawrence on craigslist. A lot of college students can't finish out their leases and there are tons of cheap subleases right now, like:
Half-Price Special (http://lawrence.craigslist.org/apa/1595154871.html - broken link)
or
2 bdrm. 2 bath. Hawks Pointe III. On Campus! Sublease for Summer 2010 (http://lawrence.craigslist.org/apa/1600635731.html - broken link)
