I'm wondering if Kansas taxes cars as property when registering a vehicle in the state. Or they may call it a "fee" based on value. Does anyone know how this works in KS? Some states have relatively low flat rates for auto registration regardless of year and make of the car, and other states sock it to ya with high fees and taxes based on the car's value.

This link should be helpful

Kansas Department of Revenue - Your Vehicle (http://www.ksrevenue.org/vehicle.htm - broken link)

When you register a car in KS, you will pay both tag/registration fees as well as property tax based on the value of the car.

Each year you will renew both. The month of renewal is based on the first letter of your last name.

Kansas is a 'sock-it-to-ya' state, though not as bad as they used to be.

Yes. My 10 year old toyota Corolla and 10 year old taurus station wagon used to cost me about $250 a year or less.

My current cars cost close to 90k for the pair and they are running 1200 a year or less.

You've got to be kidding, 5% for the privilege of working in Philadelphia?

Must be a really nice place to live, if people willingly let the city confiscate that large of a portion of their earnings.

Just drove through a good chunk of upstate New York last week... Most towns are still falling behind and losing a lot more people. Many towns looked like they hadn't changed much in 50+ years. The housing stock looked awful in most places. One of the most surreal experiences is driving through Dunkirk, NY on Lake Erie. Talk about a depressed place with a massive coal plant on the lakefront... They were celebrating a small econ development advance via a new INDOOR waterpark! So many people have left that the unemployment percentages are actually a few points lower. The only evidence of younger people was a huge conversion van on I-90.
Even though I don't live in NH now, it is still one of the least taxed states in the Northeast. They need to keep it that way and not let all the fiscal liberals get in charge of things... Also, the general lack of the "bigger is betterr attitude" is generally refreshing.

I know someone from there and that tax is a killer for econ development. The middle class on up flee Philly for the suburban areas for the most part. Not many people like paying punishing levels of taxes if they can avoid it...
