Tax on sugary soda considered in Kansas Legislature - KansasCity.com (http://www.kansascity.com/2010/03/09/1801465/tax-on-sugary-soda-considered.html - broken link)

I heard on the local news it was going to be $0.10/12oz can. That's huge. That would increase the price of a 12 pack by $1.20! $2.40 on a case!

Soda is not the devil folks. Go back to the drawing board and find another solution.

Would there be a tax break for diet soda?

<yawn>

It's just something that's been proposed. Lots of things are being proposed.

Personally, I kind of do think that High Fructose Corn Syrup is the devil and that people drink too much of it. But a tax only on pop seems a little silly.

Who knows? I'm sure whatever they ultimately come up with will have plenty of detractors. I know I'd vote for a tax on pop before I'd vote for cutting elementary music programs.

I'm not opposed to the tax, but ten cents a can is too much. That's about a 25% increase on the cost of soda. I don't drink sugary sodas, but my husband drinks Coke like some men drink beer, and believe me, I'd rather have him drinking Coke.

I think that's where I'm coming from. I wouldn't oppose a tax completely but that's a super high tax. It's a 20% increase only if you assume a can of soda is $0.50. The percentage just goes up and up as the unit price goes down. I'd be for a flat percentage before I'd be for a flat tax per unit. You want to tax it 5%? That's not so horrible....and it may not be something you'd even notice on your grocery bill overall.

I'd like to know what would have a greater affect....raising the overall sales tax by 0.5% or putting a targeted tax on certain items.

If it actually gets on the ballot don't vote for it!
Kansas just doesn't change much from its fiscally liberal and socially conservative ways does it?

New York is considering the same thing, but why just sodas? What about chocolate, heavy cream for coffee in the morning, or ice cream that is sugary and high in calories? What about potato chips and other munchie type foods that have no nutritional value at all...basically they are just empty calories soaked in salt.

So...to be fair to the industries across the board, let's just tax everything but raw vegatables and exercise equipment in the true name of health for the masses!

I do hope you all recognize sarcasm when you hear it! Government has gone way too far with dictating what is good for us. First it was a witch hunt on cigarettes...now it's sugary soda. Tomorrow we'll be eating nothing but vitamin fortified gruel mandated by the government!

I have a bad addiction to Diet Dr. Pepper. I have been addicted to coffee and sodas for ages.

Doesn't seem like it.

They got the statewide smoking ban through and exempted the state owned casinos. How arrogant.
