It's like a foyer at the back door, to take boots/shoes off and hang your coat, so you don't track mud or snow through the house.

We don't have kudzu or gators here.

You're welcome.

They're also known as a "back porch" (though my current mudroom is right at my front door) or a "utility room."

They just started using that term. Guess it seems more modern than back porch or utility room. The newer homes have a "mud" room. My so called mud room would be my washing machine room since it is right when I go into the house from my garage. Some are bigger though. Just a place to take off muddy shoes and hang up coats if you have hooks there.

What you must understand about Kansas is that when the ground is moist, the mud is probably worse than anything you've ever known. I pronounce it 'muuuud' to distinguish it from substances that can be rinsed off with water, which Kansas mud cannot (I keep a jar of it here just to demonstrate this). It will accumulate on your boots like ankle weights, adding several pounds to each foot. It is useless to attempt to clean it from them. Until you've experienced Kansas mud, you're a mud virgin. Ours is the worst!

What does work is to remove your boots in the mud room and let them dry, then thwack them against a rock. Off will come perfect impressions of your bootprints. Obviously, wearing boots in the house with mud on them is a very bad idea, and all females will drive you out with strong criticism. Especially if you yourself are a female--you are presumed to know better. A woman in Kansas who tracked mud into the house would be deemed borderline retarded, or perhaps raised in a draw by coyotes on whatever varmints she could catch.

"Thwack", btw, is a technical term used specifically to describe the correct process of mud removal!

When i was a lad, my grandpa always kept an old, rusty truck rim right outside the "mud room" door. We would scrape the bottoms of our shoes and boots on the edge of that rim, thus removing a great majority of the mud....which usually had the consistency of drying cement...with chunks of gravel in it too.

I don't think so...
I know too many seniors who call it a "mud room" to think it's a new thing...
