Love this board! New member moving to Kauai in May. We have two dogs and while we have seen some housing for them i'm wondering how hard it is to find a dog friendly rental? We both work from home and plan to search for a home with a higher elevation and some land. Figured they would be more accommodating as well. What is everyones experiences, suggestions, etc? Thanks!

Rents are sky high again on Kaua'i (up about 20% since last year), and supply is low. Finding dog-allowed properties is hard, as documented in previous threads, but not impossible. The impossible part is renting from the mainland, so you'll need temporary housing that allows dogs--again difficult but not impossible. Be prepared to pay a premium in both cases (on top of the premium for a large property).

We don't have much elevation on Kauai, not much housing above a few hundred feet. But there are several areas with large properties, look in Kalaheo, Wailua Homesteads, Kapahi, Aliomanu, and Kilauea Farms. Best place to search is craigslist. Good luck.

Big Island has higher elevations and more land, if you can't find what you want on Kauai.

Some friends of our cousin had moved here late last year with two big dogs and we'd expected to have to dog sit for their dogs for awhile until they found a place that would take them. But, they found a cute little cabin on five acres up mountain and we didn't have to do any dog sitting at all. It was within their budget and allowed big dogs (a horse, if they like as well) and was available right away. I don't know if it was a fluke or not, but they had no problems at all. This was above the highway between Honokaa and Waimea so the elevation is about 3,000 feet or so, I think.
