Dear Key, you may need to up your budget - - we stayed in Lahue area 3 years ago and spent more then. . . Possibly a Travel - agent could get to a better package, also check out Kauai's Newpaper on line. .
www.gardenisland.com or possibly www.vacationPrinceville.com

Good Luck & enjoy yourselves. . . We are going to Maui in few weeks

Look at VRBO. Almost all of the properties on the North Shore are timeshare or privately owned condos. There are a few B&Bs up there that might fit your bill. You could definitely find a place in that range in the east side, if you wanted to stay there (Islander on the Beach, Beach Boy, Kae Lani, Wailua Bay View, Makaiwa...), but I can understand if your heart is set to stay in Hanalei.

You can definitely find something in that price range...prices have gone WAY down over the past year.

Ok I know this is an old thread and I think OP has done his trip already, but I gotta post this in case other people are checking these threads for ideas. Stayed at Kalalau B&B (www.kalalaubnb.com) on the North Shore of Kauai in May 2008 and LOVED IT. Stayed in the Jungalow for I think $75 a night. There is a kitchenette with a small fridge, dishes, and microwave (no oven or stovetop). Free use of beach chairs, umbrellas, snorkel stuff, towels, beach mats, etc. On the property they have other rooms or cottages or whatnot for a little more money. Jungalow is the cheapest.

I read about it here first: The Frugal Traveler - Hawaii on a Dime - Travel - NYTimes.com

Anyone reading this, feel free to PM me for details.
