I have a studio cottage in the south shore that is $1000/month plus cable and electric. Last month was really humid and I ended up running the AC every night for 5 nights straight or so and my electric bill was $140. Mind you, I unplug everything and try not to watch too much TV (although my boyfriend is a TV junkie and he lives with me). I do cook a lot so that jacks it up. Usually my bill is between $120-$130/month. Cable TV and internet are $85/month. Like I said, I LOVE to cook and spend myself making food for potluck and special occasions, which definitely jacks up the prices. I go to Big Save in Koloa, Costco and Safeway if I am up for the trip to Kapaa and usually spend $50 a week for my boyfriend and me. Gas at Costco (cheapest place on the island) was $3.25 a gallon last week.

If you go for a studio or one bedroom you will be looking at $900-$1200 a month. Sometimes ppl are looking for roommates, which would make your rent substantially cheaper. Condos usually start at $1200 and go up to $1800 or so, but utilities are often included.

OK. You ran AC for 5 nights straight and your electric bill went up $10 for the month? At that rate, I would use it more often and be comfortable more often.

Kauai has the highest electric rates in Hawaii. Last year when oil was so high we were paying $600 a month; currently it is running $425. No AC, gas dryer, range and solar hot water but 2 frig, 1 freezer and pool.

Also talking about high, property taxes $5K and home insurance $4.5K.

Hi everybody,

I read all your messages and I wonder what kind of work you do to have so much money! But maybe you don't have to work at all?!! Here in Western Europe, a good salary (not the best but enough to be interesting) is about $2000 or $3000 a month. Much less than you!

Anyway I wish you everything goes well.

I would suggest you rent a condo in the Poipu kai resort area or Princeville. Both are safe and beatiful.
