We currently live in Central Florida (our town has 27,000 people) and are wanting a change. Including a change from the heat and humidity that seems to last months. I've been told it gets hot and humid in KY too. We have two children 10 and 14 so we need to be near schools. We would like acreage (50+ acreas, ideally 100+). We like a rural setting, but we also don't want to be too far from cilivilization for church, shopping, restaurants, things to do, etc. I would like to live somewhere or near somewhere that would have activities like farmer's markets, festivals, etc. things that a downtown area might have. Country feel and friendly people is what I'm dreaming of. Can anyone that lives in Kentucky point me in an area/town? Thank you so much.

Just look at some of the surrounding counties outside the major metro counties:

Jefferson (Louisville) - check out Shelby Co or Oldham Co (very good schools there)
Fayette (Lexington) - check out Woodford Co or Scott Co or Madison Co, some people like Jessamine Co & it is growing pretty fast but it's not for me
Some of the counties outside the Cincy metro - not familiar enough to provide a good recommendation there

Everything else is either a smaller town or rural. All the ones I recommended are a pretty easy drive to the activities you listed above and can be "out in the country" at the same time. Should be pretty easy.

Here is a map to help:

Kentucky County Map - KY Counties - Map of Kentucky

If you are looking to live "IN" a town that is a little bigger and offers a lot of what you want, I recommend Bowling Green although some knock it as nothing more than a college party town. Last visit, I thought BG was making some nice progress and Houchens was pumping some $ into upgrades throughout the town. You can easily live away from the campus. It is a town full of chain eateries so as long as a town not having a lot of "local" independent offerings doesn't offend you I think you would be fine there too (IMO Louisville is 1st in offering local independent offerings by a LONG shot). Also close to some great outdoors + easy trip to Nashville for some NFL action and concerts. It would be my W Ky choice if I was to move in that direction and had to find a job.

Edit - Bowling Green is in Warren Co for map reference

Well, I could name a lot of places in Kentucky that describes what you're looking for.

Scott County
Jessamine County

Both are just outside of Lexington.

And yet you post info here like you know everything about Kentucky?

The counties in Kentucky along the Ohio River, across from Cincinnati are Boone County, Kenton County and Campbell County.

I haven't lived in or visited those counties in enough to recommend a specific one in the northern part of the state

I can read a map dip***** as I'm sure the OP can

You are sinking to new lows bro

You could find what you're looking for in what I call the forgotten part of the state, western Kentucky. I"m in Cadiz, about 20 miles west of Hopkinsville. Hopkinsville is kind of the hub for the smaller rural area in the surrounding counties. Cadiz has a farmer's market 2 or 3 days a week and Hopkinsville also has one. As far as festivals, The Trigg County Country Ham Festival was just a couple weeks ago with around 80,000 attending this year. Pretty good for a town of 3,000! Cadiz is 10 miles away from Lake Barkley and 20 from Kentucky Lake, the largest man made lake by acreage east of the Mississippi River. There are also plenty of churches in and around town. We're about 50 miles from Paducah, Ky and about an hour from Nashville, Tn. There's plenty of land for sale. Step daughter and Hubby bought 14 acres plus a 3 BR 2 bath house for $140,000. Murray State University is only 35 miles away. And there are plenty of friendly people around here too. Some friends moved in a house just outside of town last year. Pulled up with the U Haul and before the truck was shut off, 3 neighbors were there saying hi and bringing food. Even helped them unload the truck.
Wherever you decide to settle, welcome to Kentucky!

I'm in Bourbon County, where we are within 15 minutes of Lex, Winchester, and Paris, but have acreage, and cows and horses for neighbors!! All the counties around here have fairs and such each summer, and the towns have farmer's markets each weekend. That's one of the many reasons we chose the Bluegrass area- country living but close to interstates and civilization!!

I also live in your area and cannot wait to get out. I used to live in Louisville and it is a great place. I think Oldham County is exactly what you are looking for and would be by far my number one choice. I believe it to have the number one school district in the state. Contact Tomocox on here, who is our resident Oldham County and suburban/exurban Louisville specialist and he can find you a great area with good resale, lots of acreage, all within 30 minutes of a very cultured, historic city that is Louisville.
