I respect what you're saying, HiBall. Having said that, I've interviewed for jobs before in small cities and towns and large cities, all (not) alike. Some in Kentucky, many not. Yes, being young allows me to gain new experiences and perspectives and, hell, I may move away and yearn to come back (and actually come back) to Kentucky when I'm 45 years old. You never really know.

While I have my top choices for reasons that are desirable to me, I am willing to keep an open mind for career advancement purposes (as long as it's a place that I absolutely know I have no desire to live in.) I have to admit though, as long as I'm close to Target and Starbucks, I can make myself content very easily.

For those who have already left Kentucky:

Question 1: Where did you live in Kentucky?

Suburban Louisville, college in Lexington

Question 2: Where did you move to, and why?

I first moved to Chicago, then to the Bay Area. Why is because I couldnt find work in KY and grew up in Chicago, and had relatives I could crash with while looking for work. But the reason I left was to find work.

Question 3: What do you miss most about Kentucky?

The landscape and countryside, the character of the place, and the urban living of Louisville and Lexington, which are both great cities IMO, for their size. The place is just nice, unpretentious and easy to live in.

Question 4: What do you miss the least about Kentucky?

Probably the conservatism and somewhat limited options vs larger and more prosperous places, and a bit of the "you have to be from here, to really be of here" vibe, which is really more a subconcious thing vs an attitude that is verbalized. The place is a bit insular.

I'd also add the lack of a large ethnic community, southern and eastern Europeans, like where I grew up in Chicago or that you'd find in Clevleand, Detroit, Buffalo, etc...more for the food options that come from having this ancestry group in a city or region. Kentucky food is OK, but sometimes I like old school ethnic stuff, too...

Question 5: Could you see yourself returning to Kentucky in the future, and for what reason(s)?

Oh, sure, easily!. Maybe when I retire or if I get layed off or fired. Florida has no interest to me as a place to retire to. And if Im unemployed I think having a family support system in place is important, and I think the job market would be better in KY than in Dayton, for sure.

1. Irvine, Lexington, and Louisville.

2. I travelled in Europe for a while. Returned to Kentucky but never felt settled. Moved on to Chattanooga and finally Oregon. Why? Education.

3. The landscape and the forests. The Appalachian mountains will always be a home, even if the towns and cities are unbearable.

4. As another poster said, the insular provincialism. The base, naive suspicion towards all things foreign, coupled with an unfounded faith in the corrupt good 'ol boy authoritarian structure holds Kentucky back from progress. It's one thing to travel and then come home and try to bring some things back with you, but it's another thing entirely to be immediately regarded as a tainted influence no longer suitable for general commingling. I would even go so far as to say the xenophobia extends to the southeast in general. You'll suffer many a headache until you realize your best route is to shut up and speak in monosyllables until you can leave for good.

5. I can see myself returning for funerals, although I doubt I would stay for twenty-four hours.

This caught my attention as I have seen similar ideas on other states' forums (i.e.: Ohio, Minnesota and I believe New Jersey).

For those of you who want to or are in the process of leaving Kentucky:

Question 1: Where in Kentucky do you live presently?

Question 2: Where do you want to move to, and why?

Question 3: Why do you want to move away from Kentucky?

Question 4: What will you miss most about Kentucky?

Question 5: Could you see yourself returning to Kentucky in the future, and for what reason(s)?

1 - Lexington currently, Louisville about 8-9 months ago (spent 26 months there to be exact)
2 - West or TN, open to other if the shoe fits; really like the recreation opportunities in some of those states & job market is better in some states
3 - Some people just get bored with places and like to move around, experience new things, new places, etc. I tend to be one of those people. Also as I get older, more and more of my friends have settled down & have a wife + kids. I guess not being able to spend as much time with close friends can make a place less appealing & I find myself flipping through the list of places I have visited and liked.
4 - Each time I have moved away, it has been friends/family & it's laid back way of life
5 - Sure, I'm a gypsy

For those who have already left Kentucky:

Question 1: Where did you live in Kentucky?
Born and raised in Cadiz and went to school @ Murray State

Question 2: Where did you move to, and why?
Chicago by way of Nashville. I'm a city boy at heart despite having grown up in the country.

Question 3: What do you miss most about Kentucky?
Family

Question 4: What do you miss the least about Kentucky?
Lack of options

Question 5: Could you see yourself returning to Kentucky in the future, and for what reason(s)?
Possibly to take care of my parents in their old age. Although, I would probably move back to Nashville and just drive up as needed. When my life is over, I do plan on being buried in my family plot in Trigg Co.

Update:

I have just accepted a new job offer in California. In the next few weeks, I will become a Golden State resident!

But don't worry, I will continue to stalk and comment on the Kentucky forum often, like it or not.

Silicon Valley. I'll be about 20-22 miles from San Francisco and 10-12 miles from San Jose.

The area is also fairly close to Davis and Santa Cruz, home of two great University of California institutions. The Bay Area has UC-Berkeley, UC-San Francisco, Stanford, San Francisco State, U. of San Francisco, Cal State-East Bay, and San Jose State; the prior three are among the world's most prestigious.

Also, within three hours of the Bay Area/SV are Cal State-Sacramento and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (beautiful town). I'm sure there are plenty of small private and medium-sized public universities that I'm missing.

Down south, I really like what I see out of UC-Irvine. There's also Cal State-Northridge, CS-Long Beach, Cal Poly-Pomona, UCLA, USC, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, UC-San Diego, San Diego State, UC-Riverside, Cal State-San Bernardino, Cal State-L.A., UC-Santa Barbara, and CS-Bakersfield. And that's just going from memory.
