Hi Everyone,

I am curious to know which city has more to offer? Where would the job market be the best? Best shopping/restaurants and nightlife? Which city would you consider wealthier? Which city has a higher quality of life?

Thanks for input!

In my opinion, for all of the above, Louisville. Enough said.

Nightlife - Louisville since it's bigger. The caveat is that college age scene would go to Lexington since there is a much higher concentration of college students (UofL is still largely a commuter school although that is slowly changing).

Best Shopping and restaurants - Louisville without a doubt.

Wealthier - The average person in Lexington is wealthier (or at least has a higher income). Numbers are for Jefferson County and Fayette County.

Median Household Income:
Louisville - 45,440
Lexington - 46,874

Mean Household Income:
Louisville - 62,051
Lexington - 65,770

% of Households Making More than $100,000:
Louisville - 16.2%
Lexington - 18.4%

Median (Mean) Married Couple Household Income:
Louisville - $73,737 ($91,785)
Lexington - $80,983 ($101,521)

Job Market: Lexington, without a doubt.
December, 2010 unemployment rates (latest avaiable):
Louisville - 10%
Lexington - 7.5%

Quality of Life
That's up to you. Louisville offers more of a city feel, with all that comes with it (poverty, shopping, restaurants, crime, grittiness). Lexington offers a smaller city feel with higher average incomes, higher average educational attainment, and a much newer and "cleaner" feel.

thanks for the info! Im wondering where you could live and see less of the same faces. I guess i need to google population numbers. So many cities in the south end up feeling like towns, tryingt o stay in the south but avoid always running into the exact same people.

Provided you don't really invest in a "scene," you might like Louisville; however, both Lexington and Louisville are subject to chronic scenesterism. It's like small towns organized around a venue, genre of music, a coffee house, etc., replete with their own councils, scene queens, and enveloping drama. If I were you, I'd simply move to Louisville and flirt on the edges of a number of scenes without bothering to invest in the social milieu. Should you find some group particularly appealing you'll be able to join them eventually without feeling like an insincere conformist - if they approve of you. The only problem with Louisville is that its far more important where you went to high school and to which country club your parents belonged than whatever else you may have accomplished in your life prior to arriving in Louisville.

People who really like Lexington think they have the best of everything in the world, and seldom leave in order to avoid being proven wrong.

Unfortunately, most of the Lex vs Lou rivalry is a spinoff of the UK-UofL rivalry. Which is pretty foolish, considering that UK has a significant alumni/fanbase in and around Jefferson County.
Louisville beats Lexington hands down in most every category. Lexington is an overgrown college town with a horrible traffic. Being it is a college town, there are some decent college age hangouts around UK and downtown.
I'll still take Louisville's Highlands over anything Lex has to offer.
