My wife and I have taken 3 trips to Kentucky over the last year and a half trying to find a place we'd like to retire to in a few years. We especially liked Middlesboro, but Ashland and Prestonsburg seemed nice too. Can anyone give us an idea which of those choices might be best for retired couple (under 60 though) living on a fixed income? And, of course, if anyone wants to suggest a different city, that would be great, as long as it's either in or near the mountains (or at least a very hilly area). Any suggestions on a good place to retire would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

I'd pick Middlesboro, but Ashland is good too. Ashland would have better medical facilities, more restaurants, shopping, etc. Middlesboro just seems nicer to me though.

Prestonsburg is so pretty in the springtime. Overall, though, I agree with both of you in picking Middlesboro.

Middlesboro is where me and hubby will be in a few years when we retire. It's my hometown so you know which one I would pick.

Not sure about Ashland, but I would pick Middlesboro. It is easier to get places from there (Decent road connections to Knoxville and to a lesser degree Lexington) Beautiful town. Also, Pineville is nearby which is also a pretty town. Wonderful area.

Ashland is a great place with alot to offer. I grew up only 25 miles or so from there and spent most every weekend in the area. As the other post mentioned the medical care is excellent. I would imagine that you would be very happy residing in the Ashland area. Do you have any specific questions?

My wife and I like both Ashland and Middlesboro...guess it will come down to which place would be more affordable to live on a fixed income! Can anyone tell me whether a home in a good area could be purchased in either place for under $90,000? Really appreciate the responses have received so far; thanks to all!

I would say that I did hear from Dad that the hospital in Ashland did receive a reward recently about being a very good hospital for heart matters.
