I can't answer your questions, but try gooogling for "gardenweb forums" and then look for an "Ohio Valley" gardening forum. Gardenweb folks can be very helpful with very few grouches participating. Good luck.

My wifes Dad was from Knott County in eastern ky, I spent some time there in the summer yrs ago. I remember one of my wifes cousins telling me to watch out for Copperheads & Rattlesnakes. I never saw any but I always tried to stay on alert.

My mother was raised in Eastren Ky, Hazzard to be specific. She has told me that there are copperheads, when she was a child she stepped near a nest of them. My Aunt always warned us of them as we went out to play. I wish I could answer your questions on soil, I do know that my Aunt raised a large garden the entire time we were growing up and that it did very very well.

there are poisonous snakes in eastern and western ky. rattlesnakes and copperheads in eastern ky, rattlesnakes, copperheads and cottonmouths in western ky. it is not often you hear of any snake bites, and i am assuming it is extremely rare.

gardening should not be a problem anywhere in ky. flower and vegetable gardens in our part of ky do quite well.

copperheads are poisonous but very rarely lethal, they are the most common bites but I know of 7 or 8 people who have been bitten, but no fatalities. Some did not even go to the dr! I would not recommend that! Usually they will only cause severe sickness if untreated. Rattlesnakes are much more likely to cause death, but they are nice enough to usually give you a warning before they bite (rattling)! but if you step on them reach to close to them you might not get that courtesy! The cottonmouth is pretty rare, but they are here. pretty much a water creature, never heard of one in a garden.

Default kentucky is a peaceful and friendly place

kentucky is a beautiful place and we do have all 4 seasons...the time you get used to one its time for a change...ask about our snakes..i have been around the mountains all my life..my dad was in the logging business and you become aware of them but they will avoid you if all possible....the world has dangers far more than worring over snakes..kentucky' people is like no place i have been.. neighbors and friends....i love this state!!!
