Hi All,
My family are going to move to Ky, (Tn is 2nd choice, we have a 3rd & 4th too) I will be home business (metalworking) and small farm, I am keen on the shooting sports, and shoot competively, this and hunting and fishing are the reason I breathe, LOL. (besides raising the kids of course)
My question is, wherever we move I plan to construct several firing ranges, namely a Skeet field, rifle and pistol range.
The minimum acreage i will aquire is 20 acres (ideally much more), at this I would probabbly have neighbors in close proximity, what part of Ky would I not be the scourge of the neighborhood from the noise? (Not in city limits, goes without saying)
Is this even a viable option in KY, or should I look at somewhere else?
Note: Please don't state the obvious, such as Safety concerns. This will be well thought out in that regard, I assure you.
My question basically, is it socially acceptable?

Check with the local Sheriff's office in what ever county you decide to move to. I think as long as you have 20 acres or more and be outside the city limits, you will not have a problem. But, each county probably sets their own laws and restrictions.

Be very sure that any stray bullets do not go over your property lines onto your neighbors' property. Most landowners do not care to have random shots fired onto their land.

I know of a situation in rural central Kentucky where target shooters were firing live ammo. from the end of a dead-end public road - trouble was, their bullets were going onto others' property and not only endangering those landowners and their families and visiting friends, but the noise was running off the previously abundant wildlife (as well as destroying the neighbors' tranquility). The target shooting has ceased, after involvement by local authorities - but the wildlife has yet to return to these properties in the numbers which existed prior to the problem.

There are legal firing ranges which welcome responsible people and which are designed to avoid problems of this kind. Unless you can guarantee the problems described above won't occur, I'd suggest you make use of commercial, legal shooting ranges.

You might want to research the legalities of this, as well as talk to people who live near the property you anticipate buying. Just note that people in the country notice loud sounds moreso than in towns and cities. You might also want to think about how you will attract people from the towns or cities, or even out-of-state, as a lot of people in the rural areas shoot on their own land. Good luck.

Now that the obvious has been stated...yes, you will be socially accepted at least in my part of the state. Welcome!!

What??? You guys don't like guns or something? Yikes, why? I love guns, that's not to say I have guns but, if I did, I'm sure I would like them, if I had any...maybe 20 of them. But, I don't.

Guns for protecting your home, yes. Not for randomly shooting in the backyard, probably while intoxicated....

Has anyone actually tried to answer the OP's question and suggested counties where the range would be OK?
