I am planning a summer trip to eastern Kentucky do some fishing, as I have heard the area is a good place to do so.

I'll fish anywhere there's fishing to be done, whether it be in lakes, streams, or the Ohio River. I was wondering if any of the Ashland-area locals could privy me on any of the good spots in the area.

The Ohio River is always an option, but I'd avoid eating anything you caught in it (EPA recommends no more than one meal per month of most species caught in the Ohio due to PCB contamination).

The following lakes are within about an hour or less from Ashland and offer decent fishing (and healthy fish):
Yatesville Lake – crappie and bass
Cave Run Lake – top rated for muskie
Greenbo Lake - bass, crappie, catfish, trout
Grayson Lake - bass, crappie, catfish

You can catch bluegill just about anywhere as well.
