Hi I'm an Australian female aged 26 with a young daughter looking to relocate to kentucky I'm after some information on the cost of day care aand whether there are many job vacancies in the hair and beauty sector. Also the cost oof car registration etc I'd like to make an informed decision before I start applying for visas and residency papers.
I would also love to know what the lifestyle is like over there and what the locals are like
I'm looking to move into a quite family friendly suburb I would be looking for a 2-3 bedroom property preferably with a back yard.
My budget would be around $800 a month depending on my wages etc I'm a bit of a food nut as well.

Do you have a specific city in mind, or at least a region of Kentucky? There's quite a bit of variance from one part of the state to another, and a wide range of possibilities.
I was thinking louisville but I haven't done a huge amount of research into that area or its surrounding suburbs. I currently live in a small country town
Sarah, I would start with asking the Kentucky Cosmetology Board about licensure. Kentucky hairdressing laws are/were pretty strict (often unreasonably). Be certain you can do your job, first.
The quality of your work will always determine your income opportunities. If you are good, you'll never need to worry. If you are mediocre or less, you'll always have income issues.
A top quality hairdresser can make a very good living in Kentucky.

Thanks tomocox much appreciated I'll go on and have a look everything is done differently over there not sure if I would have to do other qualifications once in there or not
Hi Sarah,
I'm an Australian living in the U.S (St. Louis) and I've been to a fair few places in KY so even though I won't have as much specific knowledge as the locals, I could probably offer some help though since I'm also from Aus
First of all, I have to ask, why KY specifically? Did you travel there and just fall in love with it, or do you know people there? I agree that it's a beautiful state though, and Louisville is lovely
Also, exactly where in Aus will you be moving from?
Finally, it sounds like you've done done research already, but if I were you I'd ask for additional advice in the Legal Immigration forums. Without a job lined up already, or an in-demand skillset, moving to the U.S isn't easy, even for an Australian.
With that said though, I'd never try to discourage anyone from moving to the U.S. It was by far the best thing I ever did, and I've carved out a life here far superior to anything I could have had in Australia, due to the ridiculous cost of living back there.
I wish you all the very best of luck and feel free to PM me if you have anything specific to ask!
P.S I meant to add, hairdressers charge a LOT less over here than they do in Australia, although customers are expected to tip them 10-20% depending on the satisfaction level. So even though the COL is lower here, your pay will be significantly lower as well. Just something to be prepared for!
Hey I just happened to talk to someone from kentucky and started checking things out on the net and have totally fallen in love with the look and what can be offered there I'm moving from tasmania so as you know everything is small and pretty much Country living. I have looked at wages and am aware of the drop in pay any tips on how to navigate through immigration would be amazing! I'm hoping to be over there in the next 12-18 months
Boy... not to be a wet blanket, but that's an awfully long way to go to live in a place you've never even visited before. I just moved here myself earlier this year from the Upper Midwest here in the US, and all I have to say is that I sure hope you like it a hell of a lot more than I do. Best of luck to you; I hope it meets your expectations.
