[quote=kygman;37201929]Tamara, I'd check down around the lakes, in Trigg County. Calloway and Marshall County got busy and have a lot of residential areas and resorts in the country towards the lakes. There's several places between Cadiz and Rockcastle, then on in the south part of the county. My stepdaughter and family have 14 acres on a road about 10 miles south of Cadiz. One of the former owners left a lot of their home made jams, jellies and wines behind in the out buildings. Son-in-law threw them all away but they have plenty. They had blackberry bushes growing on the side part of their land that had blackberries the size of your thumb. There are also apple, pear, and plum trees on their land. Their maybe 25 miles from Hopkinsville, for hospital and shopping. Son-in-law is in the Army, stationed at Ft. Campbell. As the crow flies, he's 10 miles from work, but 20 by road. Cadiz is about 5 miles from I-24 which will take you to Paducah or Clarksville and Nashville. Up 24 about 20 miles you can take the W.Ky. Parkway to Princeton.[/quote.

We are leaning towards the western corner of Kentucky. Still have my eye on Mayfield. There must be land around there too? Sounds like your kids have a nice set up where they live. That would be pretty nice. I noticed around Calloway county land was more expensive and the closer you got to the lakes. We do plan to eventually go scout out the area. My best friend's daughter lives in Murray, and so my friend plans to move down there eventually. Since I don't have family in Kentucky moving near our best friend is an incentive.

Marshall and Lyon county are nice too. You should check out that area down there. If I could convince my wife and we had the money, I'd buy a few acres out in the woods down there as close to the lake as I could get. I love that part of Ky down there, its one of my fav areas in all of Ky.

Graves County (Mayfield) should have some good acreage and building spots. I've just been back here 2 years after a 38 year hiatus, but getting my bearings back.

It's nice down there, been a while since I've been over that way but it's nice. How far is Mayfield from Paducah as the crow flies?

About 20 miles. A whole lot easier since US 45 was 4 laned all the way. Eric, I have a good story on going from Mayfield to Paducah. My grandfather wrote a nationally syndicated newspaper column in the early 1900s till his death in 1938. He one time wrote about taking the train from Mayfield to Paducah and said there was a moth that flew around the light bulb in the train car all the way to Paducah. He said what puzzled him was, did the moth "ride" to Paducah or did he "fly" to Paducah? lol

I have grandparents who both have farms in Harrison (outside Cynthiana) and Woodford (outside Versailles) counties and I just love both areas. Absolutely gorgeous all year round and secluded without being completely off the grid. When I was in college at UofL, I'd spend my breaks out on those farms to get away from city life and just unplug. Even though I live on the west coast now, I still think those two counties are my favorite places in the world. My other favorite would be my parent's place in Danville near Centre College. They liked being in a small town close to Lexington but I preferred the farms more.

I live in Owensboro in Daviess county. It is nice here and the cost of living is extremely low.

The Owensboro Daviess, Hancock and Ohio county region is where all of my family lives. I can vouch for what you said.

I researched for 2 years and finally decided on McCreary County. We bought a few acres of Paradise. Its surrounded by Daniel Boone forest and is fairly close to the Cumberland river. It's heavily wooded with about a 2 acre cleared homestead site. We need to clear more trees for pasture. We want to raise a couple cows, a pig, chickens and of coarse my fancy pigeons. We wanted a small town, friendly people, privacy, low cost of living and some good sweet tea!!. We found it. Now we just need to find a good concrete man. We will probably build our own house but we want someone to do the concrete and sheetrock. The more we think about geo-thermal the more we like it. Knowing that we could lose electricity for some time we are trying to find good alternate energy sources. That's just the planning that we are doing knowing that we live out in the country. Somerset is close as is Corbin and London. And Sonnys BBQ. That's very important.
Utah is getting WAY WAY to crowded. The traffic is really bad at times. The crime is getting worse and everything is sooo expensive. The city has such tight regulations it's beyond frustrating. The list goes on and on, so Ya I can't wait to move to Kentucky!

Sounds really nice Probie! It appears you are doing the right planning right now. How long until you move from Utah? I can understand wanting to get away from the crowds. I don't do well in crowded areas. Having the animals would be great. I wanted to raise game birds, or exotic type birds. Also chickens for the eggs. Not sure I could go out and ring a chicken's neck. Just don't have it in me. Would love to raise some cattle. It's fun to dream that's for sure!! I've heard geo thermal is great, it's expensive upfront, but saves you money in the end. What type of house are your constructing on your land?
