Fonlady - According to most gas companies, natural gas has no odor and they purposely add mercaptan to give gas a distinctive odor. Assuming what you did smell was something like rotten eggs.

I guess it may also depend on how much of an area that smell was prominent. Perhaps there was a gas leak from a user somewhere near where you were traveling?

A silly question, but this has happened to me several times.

Was there a beat up old pick-up truck driving nearby you. Or perhaps an older coal truck? I've been driving before and been struck by the smell of gasoline as I drove behind such a truck. Not sure why it happened, but the first couple of times I encountered this smell I was worried it was something wrong with my automobile. Or was this smell not of the gasoline type?

I have gone to Eastern Kentucky before and stayed for a three-month vacation and they have been very friendly and welcoming to me, so you don't need to worry about that. You'll be fine!
