Why does Kentucky own the piece of land that is surrounded by Missouri and Tennessee. To be more specific the land sits right below New Madrid. Viewing the land on google map it is seperated from Kentucky by the two other states but google map labels as part of kentucky.
I've heard that a lot of people build underground shelters on their land in case of tornado's in KY. Anybody know if that's true?
We get a quite a few tornadoes. We are on the edge of tornado alley after all. In fact, we had a F3 that ripped through Henry County yesterday and two smaller F1's. However, the big F4's that you see see in Oklahoma and the other plains states are pretty infrequent. Most people around here use the basement or an interior room ,such as a closet, for a storm shelter.
Ok, here's a question for ya. Our Verizon contract is up next month on our cell phones. Does anybody know what service is the best in Corbin or London? We never lose our connections up here in Michigan, but I'm not sure about how it is in KY.

Verizon. We have AT&T and the service is very spotty around Laurel county. We'll get five bars in and around London, but go ten miles out and coverage is less consistent.
Ok, sooo.. how about talking snakes in Corbin or London? Being a city girl, but loving KY (visited about 8 times), would there be many snakes (EEK!!) if we lived near the city? Like.. somewhere nearer to shopping, but not too close to the craziness :-)
If you live out in the country, or go hiking quite a bit, you'll eventually see a snake. As far as poisonous, you'll most likely see a Copperhead. Timber Rattlers are out there, but kinda hard to find.
I have often wondered why that little area is called KY the only thing I have come up with is to keep the border straight LOL! You have to drive to Tn to get there. There are some nice Bald Eagle nest around that area.

The state lines are marked as of where the rivers were in 1792, when Kentucky became a state. The Mississippi River left this soil above the state line with Tennessee making it part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Another example of how rivers have moved state lines is the Ohio River. If you drive U.S. 41 from Henderson to Evansville, In., the Indiana state line is about a mile north of the river. That's how far south the Ohio River has moved southward since 1792.
